Elected Officials, Community Mark 3rd Anniversary Of Haiti Quake
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Miami's Haitian community is marking the third anniversary of a catastrophic earthquake in their Caribbean homeland.
The continued disruption of Haitian life by the Jan. 12, 2010, quake that struck their capital has not faded from the memory of local elected officials, either.
U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., and more than 20 other officials met in North Miami on Friday for "Lest We Forget", an event focused on urging the U.S. government to continue supporting reconstruction efforts in Haiti.
Friday evening, Miami-Dade County officials will host a forum in North Miami to reflect on the quake's lingering effects.
On Saturday, community activists will lead a silent march through Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood before a memorial Mass.
Separately, the students and faculty of Lynn University will wrap up a week of community service events Saturday which honor the four students and two professors who died in the quake.
The school will ring six church bells at 4:53 p.m. Saturday, the moment the earthquake hit.
Saturday marks the third anniversary of the earthquake that officials say killed more than 300,000 people and displaced more than a million others.
