Son Of Elderly Home Invasion Robbery Victim Says Dad Was Targeted
COCONUT GROVE (CBS4) – Bill MacIntyre says what happened to his 80-year-old father shows the "degradation of society."
MacIntyre's father, Alexander, was tied up with duct tape, punched repeatedly in the face and head, robbed and left home alone overnight by four masked men who broke into his upscale Coconut Grove home.
"I just don't understand why people do these sorts of things," said Bill MacIntyre. "It's the degradation of society."
MacIntyre spoke with CBS4's Peter D'Oench Wednesday night outside the home his father had built in the 1800 block of South Bayshore Drive. He told D'Oench his Dad had just turned 80.
Now he's recovering at Mercy Hospital after a savage and traumatic beating. The masked men stole more than $100,000 in jewelry, watches and other valuables, said Miami Police.
"I didn't like it," said Bill Macintyre. "You get this gut wrenching feeling in your stomach. Who could do this to an 80-year-old man? It just tore at my heart. I didn't like it one bit."
Police say it happened around 11:30 Tuesday night.
They say MacIntyre was tied up with duct tape in an upstairs bedroom and the home was ransacked.
"He was tied up with his hands behind his back in his upstairs bedroom," said his son.
MacIntyre remained tied up all night but somehow managed to make his way downstairs, outside, and into the middle of Bayshore Drive to seek help.
An early morning jogger and his wife saw MacIntyre bound in the middle of the street and immediately helped him.
"We saw that he was tied and bleeding, so obviously no matter what the gentleman needed help so we sat him up and took him inside the house," said Good Samaritan Ruben Garcia.
MacIntyre was taken to nearby Mercy Hospital where he was held overnight. His son told D'Oench that he conscious and alert but is not sure that he wants to return to his home right after leaving the hospital.
He also told D'Oench that the criminals seemed to know too much.
"I think my Dad was targeted because they knew what they were doing and they went straight for what they were looking for," said MacIntyre. He said the men knew exactly where the safe was.
"They believe it was an inside job because his son told me that his Dad thought he recognized the voice of one of the men," said neighbor and friend Nancy Bolt. "Either somebody knew something or they worked here before."
Miami Police have no suspects at this point.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call the Miami Police Department's Robbery Unit at (305) 603-6370 or Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
"I think justice will be done if we find the perpetrators who did this horrible act," said Bill MacIntyre.
