Eco-Friendly Dump Day For Electronics, Chemicals

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - If you have cans of old paint, household chemicals or even an old computer laying around and have been promising yourself that you're going to take them to the dump one day – today is your day if you are a Broward resident.

Broward County Waste and Recycling Services is sponsoring a free drop off event Sunday at 101 N. Andrews Avenue, just west of Ft. Lauderdale's City Hall, until 3 p.m.

Items accepted include compact fluorescent lamps, fluorescent tubes, paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides, household chemicals, lawn and pool chemicals, propane tanks and fire extinguishers. Used electronics that can be dropped off include televisions, computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, fax machines, cell phones, compact discs and digital video disc players and rechargeable batteries.

Items not accepted include stereos, microwaves, kitchen appliances, explosives and biohazardous waste.

At the same time, Fort Lauderdale will also sponsor its first Medication Take-Back Event. Medications must be in original containers with lids tight, or in a plastic bag. Items not accepted include aerosol cans, bandages, radioactive substances, injectable solutions, medical waste, medications from businesses, or syringes and needles/sharps.

Proof of Broward County residency, such as a driver's license or current utility bill, is required.
