FORT LAUDERDALE – Three people are dead and another was hospitalized after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 595 in Broward County early Saturday morning.

Florida Highway Patrol told CBS News Miami that a 27-year-old man, along with two women – ages 19 and 24 – were among those who died. A 63-year-old man was also involved in the crash but the extent of his injuries was not revealed.

Just after 3:55 a.m., a BMW AG and Hyundai Accent were driving east on I-595 in the third general-purpose lane just west of Interstate 95.

According to FHP, the 61-year-old BMW driver failed to notice that the 27-year-old Hyundai driver traveling slower than him and collided with the rear end of his car. The BMW came to a stop in the second general-purpose lane, facing east, while the Hyundai stopped on the outside paved shoulder, facing west.

The BMW driver and his 19-year-old passenger were taken to the hospital, while the Hyundai driver and his 24-year-old passenger died at the scene, FHP stated. The 19-year-old later died at the hospital and it is unknown at this time what condition the 61-year-old is.

Eastbound I-595 was closed for over five hours before investigators reopened it around 10:20 a.m.

The circumstances leading up to the crash are still under investigation.
