Drunk Driver Accused Of Killing 5 Now A Fugitive
MIAMI (CBS4) -- A Miami man accused of driving drunk and killing five people is now a fugitive of the law.
CBS4 News partner The Miami Herald reports prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for Carlos Lacayo. His whereabouts are unknown. Lacayo, 24, faces five counts of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. He faces 75 years in prison if convicted.
Authorities say Lacayo plowed his mother's car into a crowd of people on the left shoulder of I-95 at NW 103rd Street before 5:00 a.m. on March 5th.
The motorists had just been involved in a series of minor accidents involving 7 cars. The crowd was on the shoulder of the road waiting for police when Lacayo veered from the express lane, and smashed into the concrete barrier and the motorists, police said.
Five people were killed.
According to the warrant, Lacayo's blood alcohol content level was .127 — well above the legal limit of 0.08 — four hours after the crash, after he had been admitted to the hospital.
Anyone with information on this case can call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
