Driver In Deadly Bus Crash At MIA Bonds Out Of Jail
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The driver in a deadly tour bus crash at Miami International Airport bonded out of jail early Thursday morning.
Ramon Ferreiro, 48, was arrested Wednesday and charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter.
He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at about 8 p.m. Wednesday, almost a year after the crash that claimed three lives.
"Our investigators are at this time very pleased to have made an arrest in this case that happened on December 1st, 2012. It helps bring closure to the families around the holiday time," said Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Robin Pinkard.
A law enforcement source told CBS4 News that investigators believe recklessness contributed to the crash, thus the severity of the charge.
Police said Ferreiro was speeding and ignored posted signs when he plowed the bus into an overpass at MIA's arrivals area.
More than 30 people were on-board the bus at the time of the crash.
Most of them were rushed to hospitals. Three did not survive.
Serafin Castillo, 86, Francisco Urana, 56, and Gliceria Garcia, 75, all died from their injuries.
They were part of a Jehovah's Witness group en route to Palm Beach for a religious conference.
Authorities said Ferreiro was lost and made an unintentional detour into the airport.
"According to investigators, he did make a wrong turn entering into the Miami International airport. But through investigative means, they determined that there were other contributing factors that caused this crash that could have been avoided," said Det. Pinkard.
A source said Ferreiro could face additional charges related to all the other people who were hurt in the crash.
