MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A multi-car crash, which included a marked Miami-Dade police car, shut down a stretch of Calle Ocho Tuesday night.
David Mirini, the driver at the center of the crash, claimed he lost his brakes as he was heading east.
"My brake stopped working. I veered to the left so I would not hit the car in front of me and the light turned green. I had to… I could not stop," he told CBS4's Hank Tester.
What he forgot to mention was his Chevy Malibu was already on its side after clipping two west bound cars.
He also smashed head on into an SUV which collided with the Miami-Dade police cruiser – finally coming to a stop at 32nd Ave. and SW 8th St.
The officer in the car sustained a hand injury and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
There were no other serious injuries – surprising for such a spectacular crash.
Police began reviewing everything with a fine comb, including the story of the driver's brakes going out.
"That is one of the thing that our investigator are looking at," said Det. Alvaro Zabaleta. "He is saying it could have been possibly the brakes, which is why we are saying he lost control of his vehicle."
After further investigation, authorities arrested Mirini for DUI.
