Driskel Signs With Red Sox, Will Remain At UF

GAINESVILLE (CBSMiami) – The Boston Red Sox have reached down to the University of Florida for its latest signing. The Red Sox and UF quarterback Jeff Driskel have agreed to a deal that would give the football star a baseball shot if his gridiron career fizzled.

The signing, reported by WEEI, came after the Red Sox surprised even Driskel by selecting him in the 29th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. It was a surprise to many as Driskel hasn't played competitive football since he was in high school.

Gators fans shouldn't worry because Driskel will continue his career as the Gators quarterback this year as he's the team's starting quarterback. Last year, Driskel led the Gators to the Sugar Bowl and an overall 11-2 record.

Driskel threw for 1,646 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 2013 while rushing 108 times for 408 yards and four touchdowns.

Driskel took to Twitter Thursday to reinforce his UF commitment writing: "Yes I signed with the Red Sox. Nothing changes. I am still a full time student athlete at UF, fully committed to playing football. #GoGators"
