Doral Mayor Says City Manager Hire Was "Mistake"
DORAL (CBSMiami) - As the city of Doral is getting ready to celebrate its 10th anniversary over the weekend, the mayor is setting off fireworks, but not actual ones, rather political fireworks by saying it was a mistake to hire the current city manager.
"We have to tell the truth. I made a mistake. I recognize the mistake. Now we have to fix it," said Doral Mayor Luigi Boria said about his hiring of Doral's City Manager Joe Carollo.
As first reported by CBS4's news partner the Miami Herald, Boria is going public saying he wants to get rid of Joe Carollo, a man he brought in just nine months ago.
"I have to recognize that I made a mistake when I recommended him for the manager of the city. But now I have to say I have to apologize to the city of the Doral, because sometime he has a strong reaction that is out of place," said Boria.
Boria said the two have a number of skirmishes over the summer. The most recent one was when Carollo allegedly assaulted a former client of Boria's.
"I ask him why you behave like that with a resident, with a developer. And now he started attacking me," said Boria.
Joe Carollo spoke with CBS4's David Sutta, denying the doing of anything improper.
"I'm at a major disadvantage because he's one of my five bosses. And I have to show him the respect that the position deserves," said Carollo.
Meanwhile, the mayor referred to Carollo as "insane."
Sutta asked Carollo about Bora calling him insane. Carollo responded, "When you have a straight head like I do you don't need to worry about what anybody says."
Mayor Boria plans on trying to eliminate the city manager's job next week at a council meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
