Don Mattingly & Ozzie Guillen Rivalry Brewing?
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – If the Miami Marlins were looking for a rival, they may have stumbled upon one after some recent comments by Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.
Mattingly, affectionately known as Donnie Baseball, was on the Dan Patrick Show Thursday when he was asked if managers like Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen ever made Mattingly want to just take matters into his own hands.
"No, not at all," Mattingly responded. "Well then you haven't been around Ozzie Guillen," Patrick said.
"No, I've been around Ozzie, played against him, and that's just the way he is," Mattingly said. "He was talking as a player too. As a player you would go, 'this little *expletive*.' Sorry about that. I like Ozzie. It's just the way he is. You've just got to be yourself, if Ozzie was doing something different he wouldn't be himself."
Mattingly's joking comments will likely fall right off of Ozzie's back, but he'll likely file it away for anytime the Marlins either visit Chavez Ravine or welcome the Dodgers to Marlins Park.
Marlins Release Rowand
Former star outfielder Aaron Rowand was released by the Marlins Thursday. He had been playing on a minor-league contract trying to get back into the major leagues. He was released by San Francisco last year after hitting just .233 for the season.
Rowand will not be hurting for money though. He's still being paid on a five-year, $60 million contract the Giants gave him to join them.
Marlins Reliever Facing Tommy John Surgery
Finally, right-handed pitcher Jose Ceda is likely to undergo ligament-replacement surgery, also known as Tommy John surgery, on his elbow.
Ceda had pitched 7.1 innings for the Marlins this spring, but had to be shutdown on March 22. Ceda is only 25 and was a dominating AAA pitcher who had a 1.36 ERA and 53-13 strikeout to walk ratio.
Ceda may be most remembered for being locked in a bullpen bathroom by his teammates during a game in Philadelphia.
