MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With the Miami Dolphins' currently unnamed stadium renovations ongoing, South Florida is back in the Super Bowl picture.
Led by Super Bowl host committee president Mike Zimmer, it' s a big week coming up in the attempt to get the big game back to town.
The committee is headed to Charlotte, North Carolina. On Tuesday, it will present its case for the NFL's big game to return to Miami.
"I've been telling everybody that we're cautiously optimistic," said Zimmer. "We've put together a phenomenal bid. The Dolphins and Mr. Ross have come through with the stadium and the improvements we've needed with the stadium and it's absolutely spectacular. So all the pieces are in place for us to have a very successful bid and hopefully get one of the three games."
The Super Bowls up for bid are in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
"We've done a number of bids since we had it in 2010 but we're excited to bring the Super Bowl back to Miami because we feel this is home," said Zimmer. "This is where it needs to be."
There is competition from Atlanta's new stadium and from Los Angeles, where the Rams recently relocated, and the usual number of cities looking to lure the NFL's showcase to town.
"There are financial benefits that will come with the game," said Zimmer. "Hundreds of millions of dollars that will be spent in our community over an extended period of time, plus the exposure we get from the media. You'll have media from all over the world that will come to South Florida for probably a week or so."
South Florida last hosted a Super Bowl nearly a decade ago.
Joining the committee for the bid process will be former Dolphins running back Larry Csonka and team owner Stephen Ross, who has funded the needed stadium renovation to bring the Super Bowl back.
"We're cautiously optimistic that we're going to get one of the games, '19, '20 or '21," said Zimmer. "We've probably put together the best bid package we've ever done."
