Dolphins Cut David Garrard
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – David Garrard has gone from being the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins heading into Week 1 of the preseason to out of work just before the start of the regular season.
According to FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer, the Dolphins have released Garrard. By doing so, the Dolphins saved more than $2 million in salary for the 2012 season. It also solidified the quarterback position with Ryan Tannehill as the starter, Matt Moore as the backup and Pat Devlin as the third-string quarterback.
Garrard had been in line to start for the Dolphins until the day of the first preseason game. It was revealed that Garrrard had injured his knee the day before and would not be available for the preseason.
Garrard never got into an actual game with the Dolphins.
The release also frees up a roster spot for the Dolphins to use on the two positions they need the most, cornerback and wide receiver. The Fins are dangerously thin at cornerback, with only four active cornerbacks on the roster heading into Week 1.
For Garrard, the release by the Dolphins may be the end of his short career. He was a star for a few seasons in Jacksonville, but the injury bug kept him from turning into a reliable starter in the last year and he hasn't played in the NFL since 2010.
