Divers Pull Teen Out Of Cutler Bay Lake
MIAMI (CBSMiami) --Dozens of distraught teenagers gathered around a Cutler Bay lake where they lost a friend, Sunday.
"He was like a brother to me and all of us. I still can't believe the fact that's he's gone," said Danny Morales.
It started as a fun afternoon for 15-year old Armani English.
He and a group of friends were hanging out at the lake near SW 205th Street and SW 80th Court, when they decided to swim across.
At first, friends said English was reluctant.
"After we jumped in, he said he's not going to go cause he's tired. We said alright and as soon as I hit the other side, I heard a call for help and we just couldn't find him," said Travis Murray, English's friend.
After his friend disappeared, Murray said he dove under the water trying to find him.
"I even tried to go down but it was murky. It's dark. You can't really see anything," said Murray.
So he did the only thing he could.
"I just screamed for help and yelled call 911. The girl called and they just came," said Murray.
Divers pulled English from the water, but he didn't survive.
Police are trying to find out how he drowned.
Friends and neighbors are mourning a young man with a promising future. The son of a Miami Police officer, Armani's athletic ability and respectful attitude made him a favorite among teens and adults.
"He was an amazing ball player," said Morales. Murray added, "We had played 8th grade basketball together and won the championship."
Danny's father Eddie Morales told CBS4's Maggie Newland, "He's a class act gentleman, very polite, good character."
Friends say English was a freshman at Coral Gables Senior High School. Students there and at other area schools plan to remember him in school Monday.
