Discovery Cruise Line Going Out Of Business In September
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - South Floridians looking for a day cruise to the Bahamas will be out of luck come September.
Discovery Cruise Line, which offered the low cost jaunt to the island, says the company will cease operations permanently.
A company spokeswoman this week cited high operating costs and an inability to raise rates in a poor economy as major factors for going out of business. Discovery had previously announced in May that service would be suspended in September for an extensive dry dock and refurbishment.
The company's only ship, the Discovery Sun, makes daily trips from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama Island. The ship will continue sailing from Port Everglades through Sept. 6.
Officials confirmed Wednesday that the ship is currently for sale and that a valid contract is underway.
