Despite Tuition Increases, College Enrollment Rises
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) – While tuition may be going up in Florida universities, so are enrollment rates.
Florida's enrollment in public universities went up by 8,234 students during the 2011 – 2012 academic year, signifying a 2.6 percent increase. The numbers were released Thursday by the State University System.
Additionally, standardized testing scores also showed a slight increase.
The average ACT scores for incoming students increased by one point to 26 while average SAT scores remained unchanged at 1,172.
Of the 11 public universities in Florida, Central Florida University remains the largest in the state with close to 60,000 students; University of Florida is second with nearly 50,000 students.
Florida International University, South Florida University and Florida State University all have more than 40,000 enrolled students, while Florida Atlantic has close to 30,000.
North Florida, Florida A & M, Florida Gulf Coast and West Florida have less than 20,000 students, while New College has close to 850.
