Despite Tearful Plea, Pompano Beach Rapist Gets Life In Prison
POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) – A Pompano Beach man who was convicted last month of raping and nearly killing a Boca Raton woman outside a pub in 2008 gave the judge a tearful plea at his sentencing hearing Friday.
Guy Cherubin's tears went unanswered, and a Broward County judge sentenced him to spend the rest of his life in prison, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
Cherubin, 35, was convicted in January for the crime, which was committed outside the Briny Pub in Pompano Beach on Sept. 13, 2008. He is also accused of raping a homeless woman in Pompano Beach 11 days earlier. That case is pending.
In broken English, Cherubin sobbed while asking Broward Circuit Judge Jeffrey Levenson for leniency Friday.
"I've been crying out for help all my life," he told the judge. "No one was able to help me. No one. All I needed was help. I don't know what happened. I am not that criminal. God knows it. I'm sorry to you all."
The victim was not in court to hear Cherubin's apology. Prosecutor Yael Gamm told Levenson that only a life sentence would satisfy the cause of justice. Gamm called Cherubin "one of the most dangerous human beings that I have come across."
