Deputies Search For Ax-Wielding Burglars
DEERFIELD BEACH (CBSMiami) -- Broward Sheriff's Deputies are searching for two men who allegedly used an ax to break in and burglarize a Deerfield Beach business last month.
"It's easy access and quick, very quick," owner Carl Johnson told CBS 4 News after watching the surveillance. Johnson says he has more than a dozen cameras capturing everything inside and outside of his establishment.
According to deputies, just before 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning, the two men backed a white, older-model, Ford Explorer into the parking lot of Dr. Philgoods located at 3770 N.E. 3 Ave.
The burglars then used an ax to smash through the front door.
"My first reaction was 14 tv's out the door," said Johnson.
Once inside, the thieves grabbed a 50" flat screen television and the cash register.
Johnson was relieved they had only one flat screen was missing.
"I was fortunate but at the same time they did 2 thousand dollars worth of damage," said Johnson.
They are seen on surveillance prying one television off the wall, but Johnson said he believes they did not have the right tools to remove the other sets so they gave up.
While they were making their getaway, they nearly ran into a cleaner who had just arrived to work.
"He was lucky in a way because you don't know what they they had for weapons or what they would have done to the gentleman," said Johnson.
Johnson believed the thieves may have cased his bar in advance of the break in.
"I can't believe they are taking TV's because TV' aren't worth that much at a pawn shop," said Johnson."How much time do you want to spend in jail over a tv?"
Still johnson has fortified his front door. "You are going to need a wrecking ball to get in," he said.
