Deputies Kill Man Suspected Of Sexually Abusing Girl
TREASURE ISLAND (CBSMiami/AP) — A pair of southwest Florida sheriff's deputies has been put on paid leave while the department investigates his shooting of a man wanted for sexually abusing a young girl.
An 11-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital last week after she complained of stomach pains. Tests showed she was pregnant. The mother's live in boyfriend, Gregory Johns, fled the hospital.
Authorities said Johns allegedly sexually abused the girl several times. Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies obtained a warrant for his arrest.
Two deputies forced their way into Johns' hotel room Saturday. They said Johns then locked himself in the bathroom. As deputies tried to enter, he allegedly charged them with a knife.
They opened fire on Johns, killing him.
The deputies have been placed on routine administrative leave while the investigation continues.
