Dept. Of Defense Cancels All Athletic Events Due To Shutdown
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The government shutdowns' unintended consequences is reaching into the sports world. The Department of Defense suspended all intercollegiate athletic events for all of the service academies Tuesday afternoon.
That could leave two major college football games getting cancelled. The first game on the chopping block featured the Air Force Academy versus the Naval Academy. Navy had previously said it was waiting until noon Thursday to make any decisions on games.
In addition, Army was scheduled to play Boston College on Saturday, but that game is also up in the air now that the DOD has canceled all games.
The college football problem will get worse the longer Congress chooses to keep the government shutdown. Air Force is scheduled to play San Diego State next Thursday and next Saturday, Navy is scheduled to play Duke and Army was to host Eastern Michigan.
