Deerfield Beach Rolls Out "Ocean" Wheelchair
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Living in South Florida, an afternoon at the beach or lakeside seems only natural.
But for some people with physical challenges it presents can be daunting.
On Monday, the City of Deerfield Beach announced that they now have a new 'ocean' wheelchair available for residents – especially veterans.
Former lifeguard Eric Hoyos spent the morning checking it. Seven years ago Hoyos was broke his next when he dove head first into a lake in Delray Beach. The incident left him a paraplegic.
The city was able to obtain the specially built chair through a number of donations, according to city spokeswoman Rebecca Medina.
There are only four 'ocean' wheelchairs in use in all of Broward County.
