MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A call for help ended in a deadly police involved shooting in Southwest Miami-Dade.
Just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers were sent to a home at 16020 SW 42 Terrace after receiving call that a man there had made threats that he was going to harm himself.
"I heard give gunshots straight, bam, bam, bam," described neighbor Vilma Obando.
Those shots, police said, killed 51-year-old Jorge Suarez-Ruiz outside of his home.
"This is a very quiet neighborhood so hearing those gunshots out of nowhere shocked us," said Obando.
According to police, Suarez-Ruiz had made threats to hurt himself and then took off in a Toyota Camry. Family told police he was known to carry a gun.
"When you have somebody with a gun, you don't know how they are going to react," said another neighbor who didn't want to be identified. "I don't know what the circumstances were, but for us in this area, it was very scary."
Residents were told to stay inside their homes after police attempted to stop Suarez-Ruiz who eventually led them back to his home.
When he got there, investigators said, he got out of the car and there was a confrontation and shots were fired.
According to investigators, Suarez-Ruiz died on the scene.
"Something of this magnitude that happens rattles whoever is here in this community where there are a lot of little kids," said Obando. "I'm concerned for the family I hope they're okay inside."
Police said a firearm was found on scene.
The officers involved in the shooting were a six year veteran and a 14-year veteran; police have not released their names.
