Coral Springs Husband, Father Killed In Shooting

CORAL SPRINGS (CBSMiami) - Police are investigating a deadly overnight shooting in Coral Springs.

It happened around 9 p.m. Tuesday at home at 3823 NW 72nd Drive near Sample and Rock Island Roads.

One neighbor who tried to help the fatally injured man said he had been shot twice in the chest.

Police have not confirmed that. They have also not said whether he was shot inside or outside the home.

A family member of the victim told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that loved ones are in shock and do not understand why this happened. He said the victim was a good family person who will be missed and would always help others in his neighborhood. He said he and his wife and little daughter had lived in the home for at least 9 years. He is urging anyone with information that can help police to come forward.

The man's neighbors say they are very worried and want answers as to why this happened.

"Everyone in the neighborhood is freaking out now," said one woman who did want to be identified in this report. "People I don't even know are stopping and talking because we don't get that kind of stuff here."

Police identified the man who died as 48-year-old Hicksbert Dwight Grant. The said he was taken to Broward Health North where he was pronounced dead.

"I was in my kitchen, so I just thought it was fireworks and I thought I heard maybe one or two, but I didn't think anything of it so I just stayed in the kitchen. Then I heard police coming down the street and again I thought it was an accident because we get a lot of accidents on Rock Island (Road), so I still did not get up. When I went to go check on my daughter I noticed that her whole room was lit up, so I went outside and they had the whole street blocked off," said the woman.

"My neighbor said that he heard a woman scream and I said I thought I heard fireworks, but evidently it was a gun shot because you could smell the gun powder. So I said are you sure it was a woman screaming and he said yeah," she added.

Police removed bags of evidence from the scene and noted a bullet hole in the front door.

A dark-colored Dodge Charger was also towed away.

Neighbors said Grant had lived there with his wife and six-year-old daughter. One neighbor said they have lived there for 30 years and nothing like this has happened there before.
