1 Dead, 2 Injured After Crash On Biscayne Blvd.
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - An early morning two-car accident on Biscayne Boulevard killed one person, and sent another to the hospital in critical condition.
The accident, between a Smart Car and a silver Chevy Silverado truck, occurred on Biscayne Boulevard at Northeast 15th Street around 5 a.m Wednesday.
The Smart Car, a Car 2 Go rental, is said to have caused the accident by blowing through a light, according to Miami Police. The Smart Car t-boned a pickup truck during the crash.
The driver of the Smart Car, Mila Dago, 22, was transported to the hospital and is in critical condition. The driver of the pickup truck, Benjamin Byrum, 49, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released . He is recovering at home from a concussion and spinal injury.
The passenger in the Smart Car, Irina Reinoso, 22, died on the scene.
"I love you, wake me up from this dream," said Reinoso's brother Luciano. "She was a beautiful, beautiful soul. She was a free spirit, she just made everyone around her laugh."
According to authorities, the crash is possibly alcohol related.
"They were just having a good time for the night and unfortunately people don't think things fully through and these are the consequences but we're not upset at the driver," said Luciano Reinoso. "You can't really point fingers in a situation like this."
Biscayne Blvd. between NE 14th and NE 16th Streets, because of the crash, were closed for hours while the accident was being investigated.
The area was reopened by midday.
A spokesperson for Car2Go at their Texas headquarters said the car is equipped with a GPS tracking device that will allow investigators to determine where it was rented and where it was prior to the accident.
"I miss you so much and I know that you're in a better place and thank you for all the beautiful memories and I'm sure everybody feels the same way, she was an unforgettable soul," said Reinoso's former co-worker Jamil Perez.
