DAVIE (CBSMiami) – Danger on duty for a veteran Davie police officer who was struck by a car on I-75.
Sgt. Patricia Ravine had stopped to check out a rolled over vehicle on the southbound side of the highway between Royal Palm Boulevard and Griffin Road. She was walking on the shoulder of road when she was hit.
She was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver who struck her swerved to avoid her patrol vehicle and ended up driving onto the shoulder.
"He was a little fatigued from working long hours and he was just traveling to get home and he failed to reduce his speed because of the emergency vehicle and failed to move over," said FHP Sgt. Richard Glass.
He was cited for careless driving. The driver who rolled over was charged with DUI.
The section of the highway where the accident occurred was not lit, visibility was limited and the road was wet from overnight rain, according to the FHP who add that this is reminder of the state's "Move Over" law, or to slow down, when you see flashing lights.
Ravine is a 15 year veteran of the force.
CBS4's Joan Murray interviewed Ravine four years ago when she was credited for helping talk down a distraught Vietnam War veteran who was threatening to jump from an overpass.
"He just wanted someone to listen to him," said Ravine at the time. "He felt like he's tried every avenue that he can to get what he needed and he was at a dead end."
Ravine is in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital with what have been described as non-life threatening injuries.
