Davie May Put Brakes On Red Light Camera Program
DAVIE (CBS4) – The town of Davie is expected to decide this week if they will go forward with their red light camera program.
Originally, the town worked out a three-year contract with American Traffic Solutions Inc. of Kansas and installed 16 cameras; they planned to start issuing $158 fines to violators beginning on August 20th. But after hearing from several other city's that the cameras weren't generating enough revenue, town leaders had second thoughts. Critics said Davie will not collect enough in fines to pay the $76,000 monthly bill to run the cameras.
During a meeting last month, town leaders discussed canceling their contract with American Traffic Solution citing costs of running the program and legal challenges, according to the Sun-Sentinel. The matter was tabled until their August meeting.
During a meeting on Wednesday the council is expected to vote on whether to authorize the town's attorney to cancel their contract with American Traffic Solutions.
Davie is not the only municipality re-thinking the use of red light cameras. In June, Hialeah voted to end its program.
City leaders in Pembroke Pines and Fort Lauderdale are also considering ending their programs with American Traffic Solutions because of unexpected legal and court costs, according to the paper.
In addition to Davie, Ft. Lauderdale and Pembroke Pines, American Traffic Solutions also has contracts with Hollywood, Hallandale Beach, Sunrise and Margate.
