Davie Man Charged In Connection With Found Body Parts
DAVIE (CBS4) - A major break in the case of a murder and dismemberment of a man whose remains were fished out of waterways in Broward and Miami-Dade counties over the past several weeks.
Investigators from several law enforcement agencies -- including Fort Lauderdale Police, the Broward Sheriff's Office, Miami-Dade Police and the Davie Police Department arrested Jamie Saffran, 51, Tuesday morning at his Davie home.
Saffran is charged with murder and is locked up at the Broward County Jail. Investigators said Saffran and the victim were acquaintances but have not released a motive for the killing.
Detectives have not released the name of the victim because they have not yet contacted his family.
"We do know who our victim is and we do know who our suspect is," Sgt. Frank Sousa. "And now we have time. We have time on our side to do what our investigators do best."
The case came to light on November 6th when a homeowner in Fort Lauderdale discovered a concrete box with body parts inside.
On November 14, an auto store employee found a human head in a bucket along a Dania Beach canal.
On November 26, two fishermen found body parts in a container near a canal in Northwest Miami-Dade.
Aerial pictures Tuesday showed investigators turning Saffran's Davie home that he reportedly shares with his wife and a teenage daughter into a makeshift junkyard. They pulled tons of items out of the home and crime scene investigators carted away two shovels and a Jeep as they searched for evidence.
Neighbors were surprised by the news of Saffran's arrest, describing him as a nice guy who always rode his scooter and said hello.
"It's creepy," said Jenny Muniz, who lives across the street from the Saffran's. "It's very bizarre to think that somebody like that was living right across the street from us. I'm hoping this is the only time he's done something like that. It looked completely out of character for them."
