Davie Accident Takes Out Hydrant & Light Pole
DAVIE (CBSMiami) – Two drivers were hurt and a trail of destruction was left behind in the wake of a watery wreck in Davie.
Traffic on South University Drive in Davie came to a halt Friday after an accident sent a car careening into a light pole, knocking down the pole, and knocking over a fire hydrant.
"The impact was so bad that he hit the pole and it broke in two," said witness Nancy Kirk.
The two car accident happened at South University Drive and Southwest 36th Street. It involved a newer model red Ford Taurus and a black Lexus sedan.
According to Davie police spokesman Capt. Dale Engle, the Lexus was traveling northbound on University when the driver of the red Taurus made a left turn in front of the Lexus. The cars crashed but while the Taurus stayed in the intersection, the Lexus careened out of control, hitting the light pole and hydrant.
The light pole crashed down on the Lexus and water from the fire hydrant filled the area where the car finally came to a stop. The Lexus was nearly submerged in water before firefighters were able to stop the flow of water.
"When I saw the pole, I thought the driver of the black car didn't survive," said Kirk.
Capt. Engle said both drivers were hurt but only the driver of the black Lexus was transported to a hospital with neck and back pain.
"He removed his shirt and he put the pressure on his head and I was talking to him, saying he's going to be okay. But he was alert, he was great," said Kirk.
There were no passengers in either car and no reports of any electrical outages due to the downed light pole.
