Dapper Hallandale Beach Bank Bandit Denied Bond
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - The well dressed man who reportedly robbed a Bank of America branch in Hallandale Beach made his first appearance before a federal magistrate in Ft. Lauderdale.
During the proceeding, U.S. Magistrate Lurana Snow ordered that 27-year old Jeffrey Harrington be held on 'no bond'.
Harrington was taken into custody Wednesday by the FBI after he was found at the Green Seas Motel in Hollywood.
"The guy looked like a normal guy that you'd never think would do something like that," said Alex Lopez, the hotel's manager.
According to investigators, on Tuesday Harrington entered the Bank of America at 801 East Hallandale Beach Boulevard with his hair slicked back and wearing a dark suit and tie. Harrington reportedly approached a teller and presented a note directing the teller to fill envelopes with money and warning the teller not to set off the alarm because it would trigger an explosive. The note also said: "Remember the money is insured[.] Don't be a hero."
Agents said Harrington left the bank in a taxi. Law enforcement learned that the taxi cab picked Harrington up that morning near his home. After the robbery, the taxi cab dropped Harrington off at the barber shop where he works. A barber shop staff member said that he saw Harrington at the shop placing a large amount of money in his pocket.
"He's a sick boy that needs psychiatric help, and drug counseling," said the suspect's mother, Cheryl Harrington.
Harrington said her son's wife left him on Father's Day and that he's not "a monster" but was depressed.
