Dania Beach's Pirate's Inn Now Only A Memory

DANIA BEACH (CBS4) – Some called it a landmark, others referred to it as an eyesore.  On Monday it became part of Dania Beach's history as demolition crews took down the former Pirates Inn hotel.

Named after the daughter of city pioneer and developer Martin Frost the hotel, at the corner of Federal Highway and Dania Beach Boulevard, was originally named the Katherine Hotel when it opened in 1939, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Over the years, the property changed hands a number of times and it slid into disrepair. In 2009, it was shuttered after the city's fire marshal cited it for numerous code violations and deemed it uninhabitable.

The property fell into foreclosure and last month mortgage holder Fifth Third Bank received a permit to demolish it. For the last month, crews have been gutting the interior of the building and removing asbestos.

On Monday, demolition crews began taking down the structure. Fifth Third Bank is paying all the demolition costs.
