Dania Beach Issues Boil Water Alert

DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami) - The City of Dania Beach has issued a boil water advisory after fecal indicators were found in their raw water supply.

Customers who receive their water bills from Dania Beach, not Broward County, are considered in the affected area which is east of I-95 from Griffin Road to Sheridan Street.

According to the city Water Well 1 tested positive for E. coli and total coliform on a sample collected on September 9th. Additional samples are being taken from the well for testing.

Anyone who gets their water from the city is being told not to drink it. Bring it to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using it. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. You may also use bottled water. Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, preparing food, and washing dishes until further notice.

Fecal indicators are microbes whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. These microbes can cause short-term health effects such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea and headaches. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.

The city will continuing testing samples of water taken from Well 1 and will give the all clear when bacteria levels have fallen to acceptable levels.
