Dade Man Accused Of Trying To Run Down A Cop Denied Bond
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE(CBS4)---A Southwest Miami-Dade man who led police on a more than six-hour chase last Friday after an officer fired at him is staying behind bars.
Monday morning Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Beth Bloom denied bond for 48-year-old Leon Fitzgerald Harrigan.
A check of records shows Harrigan has been arrested several times before for stealing cars, cocaine possession, burglary of an unoccupied building and aggravated assault.
It was just after six a.m. on Friday when a Miami-Dade police officer tried to pull over a stolen, black Ford F-150 pickup truck along Southwest 216th Street in the Redland.
"When the officer was approaching the vehicle, that's when the subject utilized the vehicle and attempted to strike the officer," said Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.
The officer fired his weapon at Harrigan who then led officers on a chase that took them to the south and west to Southwest 232nd Street and 183rd Avenue. That's where police Harrigan crashed the truck and took off on foot.
Detective Zabaleta said special response teams and several K-9 units were called in to assist in the search.
When he was found, he was taken to the hospital for several injuries. Police did not say if they were caused by the officer's gunfire or the crash.
