Dade Elections Dept. Test Equipment Before Primary

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With just about two weeks to go until the August Primary, the Miami-Dade County Elections Department is testing their equipment.

On Monday, election department workers conducted a "Logic and Accuracy Test" in which each step of the voting and tabulation process is tested with a mini mock election.

"These tests ensure that the voting equipment can read the ballot, correctly interpret the vote and produce accurate results," explained Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections Penelope Townsley.

Forty mock voters cast 41-hundred test ballots on 72 of 1,700 voting machines that will be located across Miami-Dade County.

The votes are cast, tabulated and the results are transmitted to Election headquarters.

Florida's primary election will be held Aug. 14 and winners will move on to the General Election in the fall.

Voters will be asked to select their candidates in a wide-range of races including municipal, local, state and federal elections.

"The most important message is to get out and vote," said Miami-Dade County Deputy Supervisor of Elections Christina White. " I think that's probably the most challenging thing cause we know from the Elections Department perspective we're ready to go we just need all of our voters to come out and vote."

Elections officials are expecting turnout for the primary to fall around 30-percent.

"We're expecting turnout to be on historical par," said White.

The elections department is not the only one that has to be ready for Election Day. So do you.
