Dade Carjacking Suspects Appear In Court
MIAMI (CBS4) – Two men accused of carjacking and beating a member of the Miami-Dade School Board last week went before a judge on Saturday.
Shaun Lopez, 24, is charged with Carjacking, Strong Armed Robbery, Aggravated Battery, 3rd degree Grand Theft and Attempted Sexual Battery. Tony Estevez, 26, is charged with 3rd degree Grand Theft and Possession of marijuana.
Miami-Dade School Board police say the employee, who has not been identified, was walking into the Miami-Dade County Public School headquarters on the 1400 block of NE 2nd Avenue at around 8:15 a.m. on Friday when she was confronted by a man who began assaulting her.
Police say the man, identified as 24-year old Shaun Lopez, was startled when confronted by a passerby and ran off with the woman's purse. Lopez allegedly drove away in the woman's car.
The reportedly tried to stop him by holding onto her car and ended up being dragged several feet.
The passerby helped the woman up and took her inside, where other employees called police and fire rescue units.
Police were later able to recover the stolen car at Northwest 79th Street and 30th Avenue. Lopez was taken into custody, as well as his passenger, Tony Estevez, 26, who reportedly told police he didn't know the car when stolen.
Police told CBS4 News that Lopez was released two weeks ago from jail for Grand Theft Auto charges and Estevez was released 3 weeks ago on drug trafficking charges.
