Dade Board To Get New, Leaner School Budget
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Full-time teachers will keep their jobs, more classes will live only on the internet, and administration will be streamlined under a $2.7 billion budget proposed my Miami-Dade's school chief.
Superintendent Alberto Carvallo plans to bring to the school board Wednesday a tentative budget that meets those goals while nicking the taxpayers a bit less for the actual tax rate. Actual tax bills will likely increase slightly because property values in Miami-Dade are rising.
If the board accepts Carvallo's proposal Wednesday, a tax rate will be set and the first of two hearings on the budget will be held July 26th.
The district hopes to save over $14 million by consolidating district offices to 4 and $12 million by reducing money set for non-teaching departments.
The proposal also makes moves that place some items from the capital budget, for large, long term expenditures, to the regular budget because the capital budget is strapped for cash.
Some maintenance costs will be cut despite complaints the district already spends too little on maintenance.
