Daddy Diaper Duty OK'd By Miami Commission
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – In at least one South Florida city, changing diapers will be less of a challenge for dads.
After hearing objections from Miami's police union, Commissioners unanimously supported colleague Frank Carollo Thursday, agreeing in a 3-0 vote to spend $45 thousand on the installation of 165 baby changing stations in restrooms and facilities, according to CBS news partner, The Miami Herald.
Opponents of the bill argued that in the midst of budget cuts and lay-offs the money should be used for necessities.
"We must differentiate between 'need to have,' and 'good to have,'" the Fraternal Order of Police's President Armando Aguilar said to commissioners .
In response to heated criticism for spending money on what some call a good thing rather than an absolute need, Carollo amended the bill.
Carollo promised to raise the $45 thousand from the private sector, return the bond money and publicly announce it in a press conference.
The proposal came about after the birth of Carollo's daughter, Briana, whom he often brings to the commission chamber and city events. Carollo noticed a lack of changing stations and felt the need to act upon it.
No date has yet been set on when the first changing station will be installed.
