Cypress Bay Football Coach Suspended For Sideline Incident

CYPRESS BAY (CBSMiami) – The Broward County School Board has suspended a legendary South Florida high school football coach after he was caught on video making contact with a player's helmet on the sidelines of a game.

The helmet-slapping was caught on camera by ESPN who was televising the game between Cypress Bay and American Heritage. Cypress Bay head coach Mark Guandolo was seen slapping the helmet of senior quarterback Lucas Tellefsen on the sidelines, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

According to the Sun-Sentinel report, Cypress Bay's athletic director and school officials met with Tellefsen, his family, and the head coach on Monday.

Monday afternoon, Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie issued the following statement:

"Upon becoming aware of the incident during the Cypress Bay football game, I immediately directed staff to look into the situation. In accordance with District policies and procedures, the District will move forward with the following actions regarding Coach Mark Guandolo, which will include a three day suspension from work and a two week suspension from athletic activities. I expect every staff member to adhere to the highest professional standards in every aspect of their interactions with our students."

Guandolo has coached high school football in South Florida for more than 30 years and has led three different schools to the state championship game, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
