Cyber Security Takes Center Stage In Miami
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – Citing South Florida, in particular Miami-Dade, as hot bed for identity theft, the U.S. Homeland Security Department is putting on a series of cyber security events this week to spread awareness of the problem.
DHS officials say they receive more identity theft complaints from Miami-Dade County than anywhere else in the country. The department's "Stop.Think.Connect" program is aimed at raising awareness about the problem among law enforcement agencies, businesses and consumers.
The events that began Monday include visits to schools and universities, meetings with business groups and law enforcement conferences. Miami is the second city after Boston to have DHS "Cyber Week" event.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez says everything from government computers to online shoppers are at risk from computer hackers to identity thieves.
