CSI Actor Pitches In For Haiti Relief
MIAMI (CBS4) - In between their time behind enemy lines, the men and women of the military help children and families around the world.
On of their most recent humanitarian missions was distributing a shipment of school supplies to children in Haiti. The man behind the effort is a familiar face to fans of the hit CBS show CSI: New York. Actor Gary Sinise, who plays Detective Mac Taylor, is the co-founder of "Operation International Children." Sinise said it all started when he took a trip with the military to Iraq and saw the poor conditions of their schools.
"Four children sitting in one desk with one pencil," said Sinise, "They didn't have basic learning tools."
So he took action.
"I came home and started to hand out school supplies I collected at my kids' school to the troops that I had visited at Camp Anaconda," said Sinise.
OIC then teamed up with the U.S. Southern Command and delivered more than 25-hundred school supply kits to three schools in Haiti. The donation was just a part of the military's ongoing assistance program called New Horizons.
In Haiti, the New Horizons task force is providing medical care along with building schools, medical clinics and digging a water-well.
Sinise said teaming up with military in offering humanitarian aid is his way of helping those men and women that ensure his freedom.
"Having a strong military and keeping their families strong and helping them get through this difficult time is a way I can give back," said Sinise.
New Horizon's Task Force Bon Voizen complete the construction of a school, two medical clinics and one latrine facility, as well as staff three medical clinics and one dental clinic before their mission wraps up on Saturday.
