MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The effort to stop GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump has taken a new turn.
In coordinated statements, Senator Ted Cruz and Governor John Kashich have announced plans to team up to stop Trump from racking up more delegates in three upcoming primaries.
The new strategy encourages Cruz supporters in Oregon and New Mexico to back Kasich, while Kasich supporters in Indiana are urged to help Cruz.
"Do we nominate a campaign based on yelling, screaming, cursing and insults or do we want to unite behind a positive forward-looking campaign," Cruz told a gathering of supporters over the weekend.
Trump called the move desperate, saying in a statement "these two Washington insiders have had to revert to collusion in order to stay alive." He added it was illustrative of "everything that is wrong in Washington and our political system."
Trump is expected to rack up more wins in five northeast primaries on Tuesday, including delegate-rich Pennsylvania. Campaigning in Maryland on Sunday, he pivoted to a general election matchup with Hillary Clinton
"I don't know if she'll be easier or harder, but that's the one I want to beat," said Trump.
Clinton is eyeing her own victories in four of the five states in play on Tuesday, wins that would badly hurt Bernie Sanders' bid for the nomination.
Sanders has vowed to press on.
"We're not giving this thing up, we're going all the way to California. Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island have their say tomorrow," Sanders said Sunday on CBS' Face The Nation.
All of the candidates will hold rallies in Pennsylvania on Monday except for Ted Cruz who will campaign in Indiana.
