Cruise Lines Scramble To Avoid Irene's Path
MIAMI (CBS4) – Cruise lines are having to change a number of Caribbean itineraries to keep their ships and passengers out of the way of a very dangerous Hurricane Irene.
On Monday, Miami-based Carnival was forced to reroute seven of its ships, according to USA Today.
The Carnival Liberty altered its itinerary for Tuesday and Wednesday which had planned stops in St. Thomas and San Juan. Instead they will be days at sea and on Thursday it will call on Cozumel instead of Grand Turk.
The Carnival Destiny will visit Key West on Tuesday; it was originally scheduled to be a day at sea. It will stop in Cozumel on Wednesday instead of Grand Turk. On Thursday it will visit Costa Maya instead of Half Moon Cay. Friday will be a day sea instead of the originally scheduled stop in Nassau.
Carnival's Miracle, which left out of New York last Thursday, will stop at Half Moon Cay instead of Grand Turk on Tuesday.
Carnival's Conquest, based in Galveston; Carnival's Pride, based in Baltimore; Carnival's Triumph, based in New Orleans and Carnival's Victory, based in San Juan also underwent itinerary changes.
Royal Caribbean changed the itineraries for four of their ships.
The Oasis of the Seas reversed its itinerary and will now stop in Falmouth, Jamaica on Wednesday and Labadee, Haiti on Thursday before returning to Ft. Lauderdale on Saturday.
The Freedom of the Seas also reversed its itinerary and will now stop in Cozumel on Tuesday, Grand Cayman on Wednesday, Falmouth on Thursday and Labadee on Friday.
The Allure of the Seas moved its planned visit to Nassau, Bahamas to Tuesday instead of Saturday and Serenade of the Seas, based in San Juan, will reverse its scheduled itinerary.
