MIAMI (CBSMiami) - It's something most men do at a gas station, but it led it one man getting robbed.

Surveillance cameras at a Shell gas station in Coral Gables show a 20-year-old paramedic student becoming the victim of a theft.

The thief walks up behind the victim and casually picks his pocket, taking his wallet.

The victim who didn't want this face or name shown.

"It was more like I felt like something had gone missing in that moment, so I turned around and saw him running and saw my wallet in his hand," he said.

It happened around 10 p.m. on January 7 at the Shell gas station on US 1 near SW 57th Avenue. The thief snatches the victim's wallet and runs off to the waiting car, and the victim goes after him.

"There was a car waiting for (the thief,) and he didn't get in the passenger seat for some reason. I was trying to talk to him and i told him to drop the wallet."

The video also shows the thief exiting what looks like a green-colored older model Mazda 929. Police hope markings on the car can help lead to their arrest.

"That vehicle has a lot of oxidation to the paint on the hood, on the roof of the vehicle, as well as on the trunk," said Ofc. Lauren Poole. "Anyone who has seen the vehicle is going to know."

The 20-year-old paramedic student says already canceled his credit cards and flagged them for fraud, and hopes others will learn a lesson, too.

"I think everyone just needs to be aware of their surroundings at all time you know; it's Miami."

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
