MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Police officers are serving up some of McDonald's finest to raise money for families of Florida's fallen heroes.
"We got to engage people in a whole different aspect. Most of the time is because the incident has happened and it's usually not good, now we get to have fun, love, share a cup of coffee, serve a meal and do what we do best - serve," said Officer Roberto Quinones with North Miami Beach Police.
McDonald's at Skylake Mall on Wednesday was staffed by officers from North Miami Beach, North Miami, Miami Shores and Miami-Dade Schools.
Officers worked behind the counter, at the fry station, cleaning tables, assisting customers with touch-screen kiosks, providing table service and ensuring that there is no speeding in the drive-thru.
Why?
Twenty percent of the money raised is going toward Florida's Tour De Force - an annual 270-mile bicycle ride from North Miami Beach to Daytona Beach done to honor and raise funds for families of Florida law enforcement officers lost in the line of duty.
Officer Jorge Sanchez, a motorman with the city of Miami Police Department, lost his life November 1st when he was struck from behind in a violent car crash. He leaves behind a wife and six-year-old son. On Wednesday, the officers worked for his family and the other brave men who lost their lives.
"Last year, in 2016, we had six officers that lost their lives in the line of duty so we are making sure that the families understand we are still here for them. You love them. We're here to stand with them," said Officer Linda Roberts with North Miami Beach Police.
It's a kind gesture that is greatly appreciated.
"I think it's awesome that McDonald's afforded us the opportunity to come into the restaurant and work the positions because a lot of times we ask for donations but we prefer to work for our donations," said Officer Quinones.
For those wanting to support, the McDonald's is located at 18350 NE 18th Road. Florida's Tour De Force bike ride starts April 3rd.
