Construction Rig Topples Into Sunny Isles Condo
SUNNY ISLES (CBSMiami) – A high-rise, oceanfront condo in Sunny Isles took a hit Tuesday from a construction drilling rig.
According to a Sunny Isles police spokesman, the 50-foot tall rig was on the back of a trailer when it toppled over and into the Sands Pointe Condo, located in the 169-hundred block of Collins Avenue.
The manager of the building told CBS4 that three, empty units were damaged, one extensively, along with part of the 5th floor parking garage. No one was hurt.
It's not known how the rig fell from the trailer. Police said it could have been caused by weather related to high winds, operator error or a mechanical problem with the actual equipment.
Authorities said OSHA will conduct an investigation.
