DEERFIELD BEACH (CBSMiami) – A link between the Sawgrass Expressway, Florida's Turnpike and Interstate 95 is closer to becoming a reality.
A 30-year-old roadblock was cleared in Deerfield Beach to make room for the changes.
The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization voted in favor of an 18-point plan to expand Southwest 10th Street in order to make the connection a possibility.
This expansion includes sunken express lanes down the middle of Southwest 10th Street, with parallel running local access roads running above.
Additional options include sound-proofing walls and improved interchanges between Southwest 10th Street and the three major highways.
Also, the traffic signal timing will be improved to better serve the flow of traffic.
"It's fair to say it's a done deal, pending money [to pay for it]," said Gregory Stuart, Executive Director of the Broward MPO. "This is monumental. This is the furthest this has ever gotten, ever."
Some of the estimates for the work have it taking at least eight years at a cost of more than $500 million.
District Four secretary for the Florida Department of Transportation, Gerry O'Reilly has said that he will find the money to make this happen.
