Big Companies Hiring More Veterans
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- On Veterans Day many take time to honor those who have served our country, but some veterans have trouble finding work once their military service is complete. Now some companies are working to make sure veterans can find jobs once they get home.
AT&T and Starbucks both recently announced plans to hire more veterans. "We've found a lot of skills they bring to the table are a good fit for positions within the company," said Kelly Starling with AT&T, adding, "They understand the importance of teamwork. Their lives depend on it when they're in the service. They usually have good leadership skills and they're quick to adapt."
AT&T originally announced a plan to hire 5,000 veterans in five years. Now it's doubled that goal.
"We've had such great success recruiting them we've hired 3,600 so far we're going to double our goal to 10,000," said Starling.
Starbucks announced a similar goal to hire 10,000 veterans or spouses of active duty military over the next five years. They join companies like Wal-Mart who have already announced plans to employ veterans.
"I think that's a great thing to help out the people who are helping us," said Tevano Green whose younger brother is in the navy. Although he says his brother doesn't have plans yet for when he's out of the military, Green is grateful for companies committed to hiring veterans.
"He doesn't know [what he wants to do after serving] but the cool thing is people like AT&T and Starbucks they're actually thinking for them.
