College Presidents Handed Playoff Proposal
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (CBSMiami) – It was just four years ago that SEC Commissioner Mike Slive proposed a +1 system for the Football Bowl Subdivision to have a playoff. It's been a long four years, but the power players in college football are on the cusp of finally having a full-fledged playoff.
Still, the playoff will only have four teams, but considering the consternation that has been in place since the Bowl Championship Series was put into place; it's a HUGE step forward for major college football.
The system will consist of two semifinal games and a national championship game. What's left now is for the conference commissioners and Notre Dame to come up with where to play the games and how to select the four teams.
The first problem could be solved in a number of ways, but the main items being considered are letting two schools host the semifinal games and then a neutral site game; or using the major bowls (Orange, Rose, Sugar, Fiesta) in a rotating format hosting the semifinal game.
The championship game would then be played at a neutral site to be determined through a bidding format similar to how the Super Bowl is awarded.
The second element may be a bit tougher, but BCS executive director Bill Hancock said change was coming.
Regardless of which system the conferences settle on, the days of the BCS are likely over as major college football begins down the road of a playoff system. Eventually it will have to grow, but just the decision to move that way has college football fans finally happy.
