Cold-Hearted Crook Shoots Subway Employees During Robbery

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – Two employees of a South Florida Subway restaurant are recovering after they were shot during an attempted armed robbery late Wednesday night near Fort Lauderdale.

The shooting took place around 10:37 p.m. at the Subway at 2863 W. Sunrise Blvd, according to police.

Surveillance video shows a man walking into the restaurant and pointing a gun at the two employees.

Broward Sheriff's Office robbery detectives said the gunman asked for a $2 sandwich. When the workers told the robber they didn't have $2 sandwiches, he demanded cash. Even though they complied and opened the register, BSO investigators said the gunman shot them for no apparent reason.

"When the employee said that they don't tell $2 sandwiches he demanded cash and you can see that they opened the cash register, but still unprovoked, he shoots both of these employees," Veda Coleman-Wright with BSO said.

The suspect ran from the store without taking anything.

Farooq was shot in the torso. Farid was hit in the leg. In shock, Farid gets up and goes to the business next door to get help.

Both victims were taken to Broward General Medical Center.

Fawaz Farid, 17, was treated and released, while Sameer Farooq, 31, remains hospitalized.

The two employees are nephews of the shop's owner. Farid was released from the hospital, but Farooq remains in critical condition, but is expected to be OK.

"I don't believe that," owner Mohammed Ismail said. "Just for the sandwich… you kill somebody like this. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Unbelievable."

The owner of the China Bowl restaurant next door, Thomas Hu, said he was robbed twice, most recently with a gun to his head.

"I was closing the store, the guy came out from the alley and he put the gun to my head and he said, 'Give me the money,'" Hu said.

The Subway store remained closed Thursday.

"Someone should be so outraged when they see this video that they pick up the phone and they tell us who this person is," Coleman-Wright said.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call BSO Robbery Det. Tony Hierrezuelo at (954) 321-4270 or call Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at (954) 493-TIPS (8477) or online at www.browardcrimestoppers.org.
