Coconut Creek To Use License Plate Recognition Cameras
COCONUT CREEK (CBSMiami) - In an effort to cut down on crime in their city, Coconut Creek is going "Big Brother."
They plan to spend $300,000 for license plate recognition cameras which will be strategically positioned around the city, according to the Sun-Sentinel. A citywide police-use Wi-Fi system will transmit data about the plates in real time.
The money to pay for the camera is going to come from confiscated funds, which by law must be used for a purpose other than necessary day to day operations.
Coconut Creek is not the first South Florida city to use the cameras. They are also deployed in a number of cities including Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Hollywood.
Lighthouse Point and Hillsboro Beach have the cameras at every city entrance and exit to track criminals with known plate numbers and catch up with stolen cars.
