"Cocaine Cowboy" Hitman Seeks Sentence Reduction
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Miami-Dade judge will issue a ruling in two weeks as to whether to hold a hearing for a former hitman for the so-called "Cocaine Cowboys" who has requested parole.
Jorge Ayala claims the State Attorney's Office promised him they would support his bid for early release after 25 years because of his cooperation.
Ayala's attorney Jim Lewis said if granted a hearing he'd like to call the attorney's who prosecuted his client, including Monroe State Attorney Cathy Vogel, to the stand. However, he added that he doubts the judge will grant an evidentiary hearing and that testimony will never be heard.
The state counters that according to the official agreement they made with Ayala, it state's that they "might" support a bid for a reduced sentence.
Ayala was suspected in 35 drug related killings in the 1970s and 1980s but only convicted for three of them.
