MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Supporters of Hillary Clinton were shocked when an election they thought they had all but won went to Donald Trump.

As the returns came in late Tuesday night in Wednesday, Trump ended up with 289 electoral votes. He only needed 270 to win. Clinton managed 218 votes, with three states still undecided.

Clinton supporters stayed at the Jacob Javitz Center in New York until around 2 a.m. when Clinton campaign manager John Podesta asked them to go home and he had a message from Mrs. Clinton.

"Your voices and your enthusiasm means so much to her and to Tim and to all of us. We are so proud of you and we are so proud of her, she's done an amazing job and she is not done yet," Podesta told a cheering crowd.

Many Clinton supporters had been thoroughly convinced their candidate would win because she had the temperment, the experience and she had won the debates. Losing Florida a major loss. While Clinton overwhelmingly won Miami-Dade and Broward counties, it was not effort to tip the state in her favor.

As they vote tallies came in, Clinton supporters realized Tuesday night was not going to be their night.

"I can't explain that, maybe we weren't ready for a woman yet," said a woman in the crowd.

"I think that there were some people who were not ready for a woman president. I think there were some people who were closet fearful of a woman's leadership," said another woman.

Other supporters were stunned by who sided with the real estate billionaire.

"When you have a candidate who says the words grab her by the you know what, caught on tape and women are still voting for him, I find it appalling," said one woman.

Clinton called Trump at 2:30 a.m. to congratulate him on his victory. She's expected to address her supporters some time on Wednesday.
